Welcome to the Official Waiola Church Website. Waiola Church was established in the early 1800's during the reign of King Kamehameha the Great and was dedicated in 1823 as 'Waine'e Church'. This establishment was extremely instrumental in the introduction and growth of the Christian religion on the island of maui and in what was soon to be the state of Hawai'i.

When the high chiefesses Keopuolani and Ka'ahumanu traveled to the island of Maui with Reverend William Richard, a missionary who arrived as part of the second wave of pilgrimage to the islands, the women were introduced to the new religion, and in dire need of a god and leading figure after Kamehameha the Great's death and the breaking of the Kapu (religious laws), they looked to the Christian Religion to solve their problems. Both women, especially Chiefess Keopuolani became interested in the missionaries and the message they brought. She was the most powerful ali'i in the islands at the time, and had great influence on the people. After Lahaina became the Capital of Hawai'i and the rulers spent time on Maui, Waiola Church was established and remains beautiful to this day.

Waiola Church has been around for almost two centuries now, and we here at the church hope to continue the legacy of the church and its people and practice our faith for years to come.
